The first edition of the Jump Startup for Women in Deeptech: Biotech and Healthtech (Jump4Women) program begins to accelerate the growth of startups led by women in the fields of health and biotechnology. Foment del Treball and the Consulate General of the United States in Barcelona have today presented the 20 entrepreneurs selected with the scholarship promoted again by the alliance between both institutions.
In this sense, the president of Foment del Treball, Josep Sánchez Llibre, has thanked the Consulate General for its collaboration to bet again on the impetus of an initiative that wants to strengthen female leadership in vital sectors for the economic competitiveness of the country: “Three years ago we started in Catalonia, with the help of the Consulate General, an academy for projects led by women, and it is a matter of pride that it is the result of the experience and the high presence of startups in the field of health, today we inaugurate the Jump Startup for Women in Deeptech”. According to Sánchez Llibre, Jump4Women represents a qualitative leap, “it allows us to go further, crossing borders, and connecting our leaders with the American continent. Cross-border collaboration, innovation and female leadership to set the guidelines for what we want to be in the future”, affirmed the employer leader.
For her part, the Consul General of the United States in Barcelona, Katie Stana, emphasized that “the objective of this program is to give visibility to female talent in strategic sectors such as biotech and to encourage new business connections with the United States and , specifically, with Boston, one of the most important innovation hubs in the world”.
The Director of Development Innovation and responsible for the program, Maria Mora, has announced the names of the selected entrepreneurs and their projects. Mora wanted to influence the network of innovative women that is being created: “A community to connect, collaborate and inspire future generations, breaking down barriers and changing narratives about the presence of women in the tech industry, historically dominated by men, and where your voices are needed more than ever. Putting 20 successful women like you in this auditorium today is the first step so that tomorrow there will be many more”, he added.
In addition, those present at the event and those selected were able to listen to two inspiring presentations by Montse Daban, Director of Strategic Foresight and International Relations at BIOCAT, on digital transformation and advanced therapies; and Carla Zaldua, CEO of acceXible, a company that has developed an algorithm that can detect illnesses related to mental health from a voice recording.
Daban highlighted the fact that the health and biotechnology sector generates talent and attracts large investments thanks to this talent. He also referred to European competitiveness and its efforts, over the last few years, to reduce technological dependence by strengthening, among others, the single market. And Zaldua has highlighted the mismatch between supply and demand on the labor market, especially with regard to professionals trained in the field of artificial intelligence.
The program has the collaboration of ACCIÓ (Generalitat de Catalunya), LEVEL, the RCD law firm and Tech Barcelona.
