¿Cómo transportar fármacos al cerebro para tratar patologías?La Vanguardia

El cerebro está protegido por la barrera hematoencefálica, que impide la entrada de bacterias, virus y otras sustancias nocivas. Pese a su función de resguardar el encéfalo, esta barrera se convierte en un obstáculo para los fármacos que deben alcanzar el órgano. Esto supone un reto a la hora de tratar enfermedades cerebrales, como los trastornos neurodegenerativos y psiquiátricos.

La spin-off Gate2Brain trabaja para desarrollar una nueva manera de superar esta barrera. “Diseñamos tractores moleculares que llevan el fármaco hasta donde no sabe llegar”, resume Meritxell Teixidó, consejera delegada y directora científica de la compañía. Su equipo investiga en unos péptidos lanzadera, proteínas muy pequeñas que, a través del torrente sanguíneo, son capaces de transportar hasta el cerebro un fármaco para tratar un tipo de cáncer cerebral infantil muy poco común, que hoy no cuenta con ningún tratamiento. En muchas ocasiones, como en esta, los fármacos existen, pero no hay manera de hacerlos llegar al cerebro.

El objetivo actual de esta spin-off , surgida desde el Institut de Recerca Biomèdica de Barcelona (IRB), la Universitat de Barcelona y el Institut de Recerca Sant Joan de Déu, es la validación preclínica del fármaco G2B-002 para demostrar que esta tecnología sirve para el tratamiento de enfermedades, como los tumores pediátricos poco frecuentes. Los ensayos clínicos en humanos no comenzarán antes del 2024. Según Teixidó, estos péptidos transportadores de fármacos podrán ser útiles para tratar otras patologías cerebrales, ya que sus “tractores” podrían convertirse en el vehículo de una amplia variedad de moléculas.
